Ground Control Supports ESB in Record Storm Recovery Effort

Storm Éowyn, which struck Ireland’s west coast in January 2025, brought unprecedented wind speeds and ferocity, leaving behind the largest number of powerline faults ever recorded during a single national storm event.
At the storm’s peak, more than 700,000 ESB customers were without power.
As soon as conditions were safe, Ground Control’s utility arboriculture teams mobilised in partnership with ESB Networks to clear fallen vegetation from powerlines, restore supply, and support affected communities. Crews worked continuously, through nights, weekends, and extreme weather, to help get homes, businesses, and essential services back online in record time.
One of the key tools deployed was Ground Control’s Menzi Muck excavator, with its rising legs, extended reach, and specialist cutting capabilities. This unique machine was vital in accessing difficult woodland terrain, clearing vegetation safely and efficiently at scale while protecting teams working nearby.
By combining skilled arborists with innovative machinery, Ground Control helped mitigate the storm’s impact and accelerate restoration for some of the hardest-hit regions.
Throughout the emergency response, ESB praised the exceptional coordination and relentless effort of Ground Control teams, recognising the significant role they played in restoring critical infrastructure under extreme pressure.
Storm Éowyn was one of the most severe weather events in recent years, but it also demonstrated the value of collaboration, preparedness, and rapid response.
